G’Dad always dressed smartly and was a very handsome dapper gentleman with a beautiful blue eyes and a fabulous head of curls. He was the absolute king of the full English breakfast and we all loved sitting around the dining table enjoying nothing more. His fried eggs are truly the best in the world.

G’Dads eagerness to learn about the process of all mechanical things was ignited early on, a testament being his solo venture to London in 1951 at the tender age of 15 to witness the wonders of, and to be part of The Festival of Britain. This venture was more than just a trip, it was a formative journey that broadened his horizons and fuelled his lifelong curiosity of the development of all working things and gizmos, G’Dad was the original Mr Gadget. He once built an overhead projector from an old Morris Minor headlamp, a coat hanger, wires and bits of 3 by 2, unbelievable! He was remarkable. Who could forget the wooden 2 storey wendy house, complete with a stable door and shutters on the window he built in his back garden for me when I was only 3 years old. This wendy house stood the test of time and was enjoyed for endless hours by myself, Jacob, Phoebe, Emma and Sophie.

Professionally, G’Dad was a skilled, award winning window dresser, an artist in his own right, who could turn any shop front into a visual story. It was in his work place in 1959 where he met Marjory, our Nana, They were married in 1961, his beloved wife for the past 63 years. Their love story is one for the ages, beginning as a simple meeting of work colleagues and growing into a beautiful loving partnership that stood the test of time, yielding two loving daughters, my Mum Amanda and Aunty Catherine. G’Dad always told Nana that he loves her, More Than Yesterday Less Than Tomorrow. True love.

G’Dad was an avid drummer in his younger days and could always be found tapping a great rhythm with anything he could get his hands on, much to Nana’s annoyance! Family was the cornerstone of G’Dads world. He cherished every moment spent with the family, Sunday dinner, every garden BBQ gathering, birthdays, Christmas, Easter and generally time spent just being together. He would tell us many stories of his youth in Manchester. They were always told with a twinkle in his eye, a mischievous grin and such contagious laughter, these stories and memories will live on in our hearts.

As we say our goodbyes today, let us remember G’Dad not with sadness but with heartfelt love. His was a life well lived, brimming with love, laughter, and the gentle tinkering of his tools in the background, always ready to mend, to make better, and to teach us the value of taking care of what we love.

Rest in peace, G’Dad. You’ve mended our toys, our gadgets, and sometimes our hearts. Know that we carry your love and your stories forward. You will always be our Mr. Fix It, lovingly remembered and dearly missed today and everyday.
